Tips
from Our Skiing Professionals
You don't
want to be too hot or too cold.
None of
us enjoy being too hot or too cold. Naturally, we are all different
and the above statement applies differently to each one of us.
But relatively speaking, it is accurate for everyone. This is
especially true when it comes to skiing, being out in the cold
and the elements in the middle of winter when you might normally
expect to be sitting in front of a fire or snuggled up in a
cozy room with a book. We recognize that skiing is an active
sport, but recreational skiing does not necessarily work up
a sweat and if it does, we have to be sure that the sweat does
not, in fact, make us feel the cold more. It is very important
to wear clothing that will not create a sweat layer on your
body but will rather remove it away from your skin. Your clothing
should also allow your body to breathe and not suffocate. There
are numerous alternatives on the market when you are ready to
buy. Don't be fooled by brand names, price tags and all the
other marketing hype. The most expensive is not necessarily
the best; the most fashionable is probably not the best investment
either. Do your research and speak to people in the know - not
the store-keepers as they will be guided by what they have in
stock and what gives them the best return on their investment.
Don't even go by what the competitive professionals are wearing
or promoting as they are all sponsored, their clothing is free
to them and they are paid to support their sponsor. Here are
a few thoughts to help you:
-
You don't want to be bulked up like the Michelin man as you
won't be able to move like you should. You do want to be warm
but also flexible
-
Believe
it or not, being cool does not mean wearing the latest trending
gear, it means enjoying a full day of skiing no matter what
your gear looks like.
-
Take
note of brands worn by multiple Olympic ski teams as especially
those brands that you have seen used repeatedly by those teams
-
You
want to protect your extremities - refer to sections on headwear,
gloves and socks below
-
Ski
patrollers are usually a very reliable source of information
when it somes to clothing and keeping warm as they are out
there day after day.
